Milford Sound township is 120km from Te Anau (State Hwy 94).

Ensure you have sufficient fuel to return to Te Anau, as there is no petrol or diesel for purchase by the public at Milford Sound.

Note: Our new start time of 1.15pm, at Deepwater Basin exit (just south of the Milford Airfield), is timed for when the majority of tourists will be out on their 12.30 Milford Sound launch cruises, giving riders relatively empty roads back to Te Anau.

Our officials and moto scouts will “round” you up, pre-start in time for the race briefing and your actual departure.

This is timed for when the majority of tourists will be out on their 12.30 Milford Sound launch cruises, giving riders relatively empty roads back to Te Anau.

Approximately 500m before the tunnel, follow the directional signs and marshals into the Tunnel Operations carpark (right turn down thru’ the culvert to the cluster of large buildings). This is also where coaches and the bike transport will disembark.

Our officials and moto scouts will “round” you up, pre-start in time to get up to the Tunnel Carpark for the race briefing and your actual departure.

4. How do we get to the Eglinton Challenge start at Knobs Flat?

  • On the day of the event (Saturday 19th February) from 8.00am until the coach transport departs.

If you have booked pre-event transport for the Milford Classic and Homer Hundred, you will need to rack your bike (race morning only), at the Meridian Marquee in Mokonui St – up until 10.15am. Note this earlier time for Homer Hundred bikes, is required as the same truck and trailer unit will take both start’s bikes on the one run.

7. Is there transport available to the start of the events?

While your entry fee does not include transport to the start of the race, we do offer a competitor and bike transport service for the event.

8. Where are the Race Briefings held?

All race briefings will be held at the start locations for each of the respective events, Immediately prior to the actual start line.

It is compulsory that you attend the briefing as it contains important safety information that you need to know to complete the event.

9. Are we able to take gear bags?

You can use a bag as a drop bag in which you can leave gear at the start. Your bag will be taken to the finish area at Te Anau for you to collect.

Uncollected bags and any other lost property will then be available at the breakfast prizegiving at the Distinction Luxmore Hotel, Town Centre, Te Anau.

10. What do we do with our Race Numbers?

Your race number will be in your race pack that you collect at registration on the day of the event. The race numbers must be attached to your back for the entire event. Attach your race number using the 4 safety pins provided. Seatpost numbers provided (stickers) should also be attached, as you will likely have clothing changes during the race.

11. Timing Transponders

Timing will be via Ultra System and will be via foam encased chips on the back of your race number.

12. Do these race numbers/chips need to be returned?

No.

13. Can I wear an i-pod MP3 or other music player?

No, these are not permitted in the Event for safety and out of consideration to fellow competitors and the hazard they present in hearing traffic and Marshals instructions.

14. Age Limits

The event has the following age limits:

(Any enquiries, apply to the Race Director at: oretievents@gmail.com )

  • Milford Classic: 18 years +
  • Homer Hundred: 17 years +
  • Eglinton Challenge: 16 years +

15. What services will be available on the course?

Aid stations: there will be two aid stations along the course.

These will be provided at Knobs Flat (65kms to go) and the top of Retford Hill at (35km to go). Additionally, tail end vehicles will assist back marker riders as required.

Toilets: toilets are available on the course at The Divide; Knobs Flat and at Te Anau Downs as well as additional toilets just off the highway in camping sites, where indicated by Department of Conservation signage.

Bike mechanics: limited assistance may be available at each start assembly area.

First Aid: Paramedics will be on course

Sag wagons: these will tail end the whole course for all three sub-events

16. What do we do with rubbish?

The event is primarily cycled through the Fiordland National Park. We are required to leave the National Park as we found it so would greatly appreciate all riders and supporters carefully managing their own rubbish. Littering the course will endanger the future of this race so please take out what you bring in - naturally this applies to the whole of the course!

In the approach to each aid station we request that drink bottles are only discarded within the zone and just into the water-table, so they are visible and readily able to be collected.

17. Are there any cut-off times on the course?

We have never felt the need to enforce cut-off times on the course to date.

Naturally with our new start times for 2022, we envisage being finished “well before dark”, around an estimated 8pm.

However, if a rider is so slow, that any individual or two are at least an hour or more behind the next last few and the pack up and marshals in Te Anau are unreasonably delayed; we will impose a cut-off.

18. Are the roads closed for the race?

There are NO ROAD CLOSURES on the course therefore normal road rules apply throughout the duration of the event. Emergency vehicles and race officials will be moving around the main bunches so keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles at any time.

Within the managed zone [Milford Sound to the Divide]; course officials will be working to ensure there are no vehicles on the road, other than those in official escorted convoys. From beyond The Divide you may expect following and oncoming traffic at any time.

It is an absolute no to ride (other than in short overtaking manoeuvres), more than two abreast. There are many sections with noticeably short line of sight and impatient drivers are known to undertake risky passing. Similarly, peleton groups of more than 6-8 are discouraged, for the same reasons above.

19. What services will be available at the Finish Area?

There will be a range of services available at the finish line on the Te Anau Lakefront, outside the Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas including:

  • First Aid
  • Aid station (food and drink)
  • Drop bag collection

20. Is there a Reserve Day for the event?

In the event of severe weather on the western side of the main event, race organisers may shorten the course/change the start location if deemed necessary for safety of competitors and the public.

21. Where can I find out about the Results?

Confirmed official results will be on the event website www.teanauevents.co.nz within 3 hours after the completion of the event.

22. Is there a Prizegiving for the event?

A breakfast will be held at 8.00am on Sunday 20th February 2022, at the Distinction Hotels 1st floor function room. (The sharp start to get those who have travelled from afar, on the road homeward promptly).

A short prizegiving will be held (at the same venue) at 8.45am and those not wishing to have breakfast are most welcome to join us there.

Apart from the events trophies, all others are spot prizes - but you must be present at the prizegiving breakfast to receive these.
