Course

Course Overview

  • Total Length: 60km
  • Starting Elevation: 360m above sea level
  • Highest Elevation: 300m above sea level Ending Elevation: 220m above sea level at Finish in Te Anau
  • Distance Markers: Every 10km until 10km to go, then 5km, 3km, 1km to the Finish.

Course Description

The Fiordland Lobster Eglinton Challenge is a readily achievable recreational ride.

Riders follow the Eglinton Valley (downstream), with a net drop from an altitude of 360 metres at Knobs Flat to 220 metres above sea level at the Te Anau finish. The only climb of significance is out of the Retford Stream Valley onto the Te Anau Downs which is 70 metres over 1.5km (35kms to go).

Oncoming Vehicles

As there are no road closures on the course normal road rules apply throughout the duration of the event. Emergency vehicles and race officials will be constantly moving around the main bunches so keep any eye out for oncoming vehicles at any time.

Nutrition and Dehydration

You are responsible for your own fuel. There will be 2 aid stations along the course, but make sure you stay hydrated and keep nutrition levels up throughout the course.

Care in the National Park

The first 80kms of the event is through the Fiordland National Park. We are required to leave the National Park as we found it so would greatly appreciate all riders and supporters removing their own rubbish. Drink bottle drop-zones will be indicated immediately before and after each of the aid station. Here, drink bottles can be ditched in the water-table alongside the road. Littering the course may jeopardise the future of this race so please take out what you bring in.

Finish

The Milford Mountain Classics three sub-events all finish along the Lakefront – opposite Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas premises, Southern Discoveries and The Moose Restaurant and Bar.

The Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villa’s sloping lawns make an ideal vantage point.

Parking

We recommend supporters and spectators park at the Lakefront end of Town Centre (i.e. the “Main Street)”, or further along past the Town Centre Roundabout to the West.
