Workshop: Fiordland Buffer Zone Project

Workshop: Fiordland Buffer Zone Project

Event Date:
Tuesday, January 12, 2021
Fiordland Community Events Centre
fb Event Summary:
Environment Southland is expanding its weed control programme in the Te Anau Basin to provide jobs in the local community and stop invasive species like cotoneaster and Darwin’s barberry from entering Fiordland National Park. The ‘Fiordland Buffer Zone’ project runs over two years and involves weed control in sites throughout a one kilometre buffer zone alongside the park, from Manapouri in the south to Milford Sound in the north. The work is dispersed as multiple contracts, and will enable existing local businesses to retain staff by reassigning them to weed control work during times of low customer volumes. The work is physically demanding and is best done by teams moving through the bush, cutting weed stems and applying herbicide gel as they go. Interested businesses are invited to come along to this public workshop to find out more about the project, how much work is available and how to apply to be part of the project. Drop-in sessions will also be available on Wednesday 13 January for further discussion. For more information please contact Becky Goodsell at Environment Southland on 0800 76 88 45 or email
